Versailles – La Malmaison

‘Great Century’ atmosphere makes Versailles one of the most prestigious heritage sites in France, and certainly the finest in terms of French 17th century art. What had been the former hunting lodge of Louis XIII was transformed by Louis XIV into the Versailles we know today. The Sun King engaged the architects of the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte to design the Royal apartments, the Hall of Mirrors, the Grand Trianon (to which Louis XIV retreated when he wanted to escape the oppressive etiquette of Versailles), the Petit Trianon with its English gardens (created by Louis XV and Madame de Pompadour), and the famous Hameau de la Reine (the rustic retreat built to allow Marie-Antoinette to escape the hurly-burly of Château life).
